  • Oil Painting for Beginners and Beyond

    This class is designed for those wishing to learn or improve their skills through practical lessons in underpainting, fat-over-lean, glazing and color theory to name a few techniques. Each lesson will begin with a demonstration, students will then have time to work independently with guidance from the instructor. A supply list will be given to students from the instructor on the first day at class.

    Please join longtime art instructor Dave Zander for a fun, creative and informative class on the use of pastels and oil crayons in drawing. Mr. Zander is a 44 year vet with many, many years of receiving instruction at the U of M Studio Arts Department and dispensing instruction for the Chaska Public Schools. His class will feature some formal instruction, a look at great pastel works of the best such as Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas, studio time and also simple, nonjudgmental, helpful critiques. Please bring a subject for a drawing to the first class. The class will stress composition, balance, organization of picture space, value, color and texture.
  • Open Pottery Studio

    If you are currently taking a pottery class through Hopkins Community Education, join us at Open Pottery Studio to work on a personal project or continue to work on your class projects. Hopkins Community Education pottery instructors supervise the open studio time, however, no instruction is provided. Open Pottery Studio fee does not include clay. Use the clay from your class or purchase additional clay from instructor for $40. These sessions are open to current Hopkins Community Education pottery students. No Drop In's will be accommodated - students must pre-register. Cost of open studio covers staff pay to oversee studio time. *Students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

  • Sparkling Glass Mosaic Garden Gazing Ball

    Using a bowling ball and glass/mirror, I will help you create a gazing ball to add some sparkle to your garden. Stencils and idea book are available during this 2 evening class. The first evening will be designing and working on your project (with some homework) while the second night is grouting and learning about mosaics. Please bring your own bowling ball. They are often found at thrift stores. *There is a $35 supply fee due at the first class to the instructor.

You will learn how to manage edges, make your colors sing, work with textures and strengthen values. Each class is designed to build your confidence in painting with watercolor. Reference images and step-by-step demonstrations are provided every week. Some experience with watercolor is recommended.
