Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station was soon one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the lighthouse offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Look around the site at your own pace and spend time in the gift store. [Note: There is a considerable amount of walking on the self guided tour into the historic buildings on the site.] 2:15 p.m. Leave the Split Rock Lighthouse historic site. 2:30 p.m. Arrive at Gooseberry Falls State Park. Gooseberry Falls is known for its spectacular waterfalls, river gorge and Lake Superior shoreline. Listen to thunderous roar of the Upper, Middle and Lower Fall. You can stop by the Joseph N. Alexander Visitor Center for park information, interpretive displays, a park video and Nature Store. 3:30 p.m. Leave Gooseberry Falls. 4:30 p.m. Arrive at Canal Park in Duluth. Take a few minutes to stroll along the lakefront, visit shops or grab a bite to eat (on own) in this tourist district. 5:45 p.m. Leave Duluth. 8:15 p.m. Estimated return time to Hopkins.
