Safeway Driving School provides a comprehensive, in-person, driver education program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for safe and responsible driving. Our program is open to students aged 14.5 to 18, offering flexibility and convenience for families.

Pay $435 total, or choose our convenient payment plan:
$249 at registration for the classroom portion, followed by a total of $160 due during the behind-the-wheel training. This amount can be divided between the first and second behind-the-wheel lessons.

What's Included:

• 30 hours of classroom instruction: Covering state-approved curriculum to prepare students for their permit exam.
• 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training: Individualized, hands-on driving lessons with professional, experienced instructors.

• State certification: Upon completion of the program, students will receive all necessary documentation to apply for their Minnesota driver’s license.

Important Timelines and Planning Tips:

• Students have one year from the end of the classroom portion or their 15th birthday, whichever is later, to complete their three, 2 hour, behind-the-wheel lessons.
• Safeway recommends 30 days between each behind-the-wheel lesson, with the final lesson completed about 30 days before the potential road test.
• It is essential for students to practice regularly with a supervising driver, as frequent practice builds the confidence and skills needed for successful completion of the program.

Parent Involvement: 

Parents are their child’s primary driving instructor so it is critical to practice regularly with permitted drivers in all driving situations. Students are required to practice at least 50 hours (15 at night) and record the practice on a driving log. Safeway offers online Parent Classes. The class cost $10.00 and qualifies for a reduction in student practice hours. Important parent information will be sent home on the first day of class.

Payment Plan: Pay $249 at registration for classroom instruction, then $160 directly to Safeway later for behind-the-wheel instruction.
