Beginning Chess Camp

Youth Programs / Summer Youth Programs / Camp Royal Week 1 -
Youth Summer 2024

Summer Chess Camp is an excellent opportunity to develop better Chess Skills in the summer! Our fun and educational chess summer camp is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players. Children K-5 will learn opening and mid-game strategies and the all-important end-game. Students will also learn about the history of chess, and study famous players and matches. Players will become familiar with chess terminology and score-sheet notation. Students will play matches against each other, play against chess computers, and compete in a tournament on the final day. In addition to playing chess, campers will also play various other enjoyable board games, decide chess puzzles, and have sports activities at the playground. All campers will have chess awards.

Instructor

Igor Rybakov

Igor Rybakov started playing chess in school as a young boy in his native Belarus. He started teaching chess and checkers to children in Russia over 30 years ago. When he arrived in the United States in 2001, he began teaching chess to students at Hopkins Public Schools and other surrounding west metro areas. In 2010, he was named "Best Chess Coach in Minnesota." Igor believes that chess is "good training for the brain" and is a great team sport that increases a student's logical and strategic thinking abilities. Igor is very excited about the Hopkins Chess Program, where there are a large number of girls playing chess, too, in a sport that has often been dominated by boys.
