Pottery-Empty Bowls

No pottery experience is necessary to create a beautiful ceramic soup bowl for our annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser to fight hunger in our local community! People in hundreds of communities around the world are hosting Empty Bowls events: choose your favorite soup bowl, eat a simple meal of soup and bread, enjoy the entertainment, and make a free will donation. Our event’s donations support the good work of ICA Food Shelf and ResourceWest. Each participant will build two bowls by hand — one bowl to donate to the Empty Bowls event and one to keep as your reminder of all the “empty bowls” in our community. Bowls are created at the first class and glazed at the second. This is a wonderful family experience — please register parent and each child separately. Class fee includes clay, glaze, and firing cost.

Instructor

Steve Frederickson

Steve began teaching pottery for Hopkins Community Education in fall 1988. An incredibly dedicated teacher, Steve says he has every class list from the time he started teaching. Many of his students have studied with him for years. In fact, he has one student who has been taking pottery from Steve since January 1992. And several of his longtime students have gone on to teaching pottery.

Steve was very involved in the initial planning for the Annual Empty Bowls event which raises money for the ResourceWest and the ICA Food Shelf. He has continued to offer support to Empty Bowls each year by volunteering his time to teach Empty Bowls classes in addition to creating bowls for the silent auction.

A long standing tradition of his Tuesday night pottery classes (for at least 15 years) is that on the pottery "pick-up night," the class goes out for dinner. Steve says that many people who come to his Tuesday night class consider it "Tuesday Therapy night."

A self-described "foodie", Steve is also passionate about cooking. He has traveled to Italy and France to study their cuisines, and often teaches a cooking class for Hopkins Community Education in addition to his pottery classes.

What Students are Saying:

"Very Enjoyable, great tips throughout".

"Excellent experience".

Kathy Israel

Kathy took her first pottery class through Hopkins Community Education in 1995. Over the last sixteen years, she has continued to grow in her skills as a potter. For the last ten years, Kathy has worked helping hundreds of adults and children make bowls for the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. Kathy has developed a signature "Empty Bowls necklace" that she produces each year for the event. Kathy also enjoys creating ceramic "garden art" in addition to all her creations for Empty Bowls.
