Chair Yoga

Adult / Fitness -
Adult Summer 2022

Chair yoga is a gentle practice that includes seated poses on the chair and standing poses using the chair for balance and support. Yoga can help manage arthritis and osteoporosis while strengthening your immune system. This class is ideal for those with limited mobility and strength, or who are healing from injuries. Participants will need access to Zoom and a straight back chair.

This class will meet online via Zoom. Online meeting information will be sent via email by the instructor before the first class.

What past students are saying about this course:

  • Nancy Marcy is a treasure to Hopkins Community Ed!!!
  • The instructor is very knowledgeable and personable. Willingly accommodates any physical limitations of the participants by explaining and demonstrating how to modify the pose to prevent pain or injury but still get desired stretch. Very enjoyable and beneficial class. I also appreciate this option for online class.
  • As always, Nancy is terrific--well planned and prepared, energetic and very helpful.
  • Great instructor; great class. Instructor provides lots of variety in poses to make each class unique, effective and enjoyable. Thanks.

Nancy Marcy, RYT500 is a retired physical education and health teacher who has always led an active life. During my teaching career, I was lucky to be able to learn and teach many kinds of physical activity: Aquatics, athletics, dance, martial arts, strength training, and yoga. Of all these, yoga has become an indispensable means to a balanced, healthy lifestyle. With 16 years of experience in practicing and teaching yoga, I continue to derive benefits that are physical, emotional, and spiritual.

There are many types of yoga, though all of them share basic tenets. Iyengar Yoga resonates with me because of its precision, discipline, and keen focus on proper, healthful biomechanics. I became a certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor in 2015.

I am a member of the Yoga Alliance, certified at the 500-hour level. I received that training from Spirit of the Lake Yoga and Wellness Center with an emphasis on yoga therapy. I have a master of education degree from the University of Minnesota.

Because of my background as a coach, dance teacher, and adapted physical education teacher, I have a keen interest in working one-on-one with people to help them learn and use yoga asana for their individualized needs, whether they be for the purpose of athletic progress, to increase range of motion, or to remediate joint pain. I am also trained in Ayurveda (the East Indian science of health), and can work with you to develop healthy nutritional and self-care habits according to your personal constitution.
